Horseback Riding

is a community project that offers fun and diverse travel experiences that are sustainably rooted in the local area. Twenty committed local community members, all of whom value nature over financial gain, help run the business. Jamao EcoTours is proud to be the first tour company in the Dominican Republic to use this community-based business model.

First organized in 2015

Jamao Ecotours

through the Board of Ecotourism Development of Jamao al Norte, Jamao EcoTours received financial support from the Inter-American Development Bank and the Ecotourism Group of Espaillat Province. As a result, we are able to link tourism products and services by bundling them as excursions. These excursions benefit more than 80 families in 9 local communities.

Approximately 25 young men and women serve as local guides. Eight families are dedicated to preparing delicious lunches for tourists visiting Jamao al Norte. One family specializes in baking artisanal cookies that have been popular locally for more than 50 years. These cookies are a must-try snack and are sold in stores in Jamao al Norte.

Another family serves our guests natural juices, including pineapple, lemon, orange, and tamarind juice. Two supermarkets provide cheese, ham, and packaging for refreshments for our clients. Overnight guests can find accommodations in three local homes, a small hotel, and campsites.

Nationally, Jamao EcoTours has positioned Jamao al Norte as a travel destination that benefits many local businesses and creates a ripple effect for others who service tourism.

Business Model

Our business model is established so that 70% of the cost of every excursion is directly distributed to those who provide our services, while the remaining 30% is utilized for capital improvements, such as buying equipment, expanding excursions, and improving all of our service offerings. Individually, many of our guides use their Jamao EcoTours wages and tips to pay for university studies.

At Jamao EcoTours, we continually work to make what we do meaningful by sharing our knowledge with students, community tourism organizations, and other ecotourism groups. We do this by conducting workshops, visiting communities, providing excursions, and hosting feedback sessions.

Protecting the environment and our natural resources is the top priority for everyone involved in Jamao EcoTours. We hope our tours and excursions educate all visitors about the importance of caring for the environment and create a culture of sustainability for future generations.
